A capsule wardrobe sounds like something only people with money and minimalist apartments on Pinterest have. But I promise you — it's actually the most budget-friendly way to dress. And when you build it second-hand? Even better.

Let me break it down for you the Re:dressed way.

What even is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a small, carefully chosen collection of versatile pieces that all work together. The idea is that you have fewer items but can create more outfits because everything mixes and matches. Less clutter, less stress, more style. It's the opposite of fast fashion — and it's perfect for anyone who wants to look good without spending a lot.

Step 1 — Start with what you already own

Before you buy anything, go through your wardrobe and pull out the pieces you actually reach for. Be honest. If you haven't worn it in six months, it's not part of your capsule. Donate it, sell it on Yaga, or repurpose it. You might already have more of a capsule than you think — you just can't see it under all the clutter.

Step 2 — Choose your colour palette

This is the secret to a capsule wardrobe that actually works. Pick 3–4 neutral base colours and 1–2 accent colours that you love and that suit your skin tone. Step 4 — Shop second-hand first, always

You will almost always find what you need second-hand — often in better quality than what you'd buy new at the same price. I've built almost my entire wardrobe this way and I've never once felt like I was compromising on style.

Set a budget per item before you go. For most capsule basics at a thrift store in Cape Town, you're looking at R20–R80 per piece. A full capsule wardrobe built second-hand can cost you under R500 if you're patient and strategic.

Step 5 — Resist the urge to keep adding

The hardest part of a capsule wardrobe isn't building it — it's maintaining it. Every time you want to add something new, ask yourself: does this work with at least 3 other things I already own? If the answer is no, leave it. A capsule wardrobe only works if you're intentional about what gets in.

So you want to start thrifting but you don't know where to begin. Maybe you've walked into a second-hand store, felt completely overwhelmed, and walked right back out. That was me once. Now I can spend two hours in a thrift store and come out with five incredible pieces for under R200. Let me show you how.

Why thrift shopping in Cape Town is actually amazing

Cape Town has one of the best second-hand scenes in South Africa. Between the charity shops, flea markets, Yaga sellers, and vintage boutiques — there is genuinely something for every style and every budget. The key is knowing where to look and what to look for.

Where to start — the best spots in Cape Town

Shout SA (multiple locations) — This is your entry-level thrift store. Clothes are sorted by type and prices are very reasonable. Great for basics, denim and unexpected gems. Check the Kenilworth and Claremont branches for the best stock rotation.

Hospice Charity Shops — Underrated and undervisited. Hospice stores across Cape Town often have beautiful, well-kept donations from all kinds of households. You'll find everything from office wear to vintage pieces. Prices are low and the cause is good.

The Cape Town Flea Market (Greenmarket Square) — More curated than a charity shop, great for vintage accessories, jewellery, African print pieces and one-of-a-kind items. Go on a weekday morning for the best selection before tourists get there.

Milnerton Flea Market — A Cape Town institution. Open on weekends, massive, and full of surprises. Arrive early (before 9am) for the best finds. Bring cash, wear comfortable shoes and go with no expectations — that's when you find the best things.

What to look for when thrifting

Check the fabric first — natural fibres like cotton, linen and wool last longer and feel better than cheap polyester. Look for quality stitching, strong buttons and zips that work smoothly. Don't get distracted by the print or colour before you've checked the construction — a beautiful piece in bad condition isn't worth it.

Also check for: fading, pilling, stains (some come out, many don't), missing buttons, broken zips, and underarm discolouration. Hold the item up to the light to spot thin patches in the fabric.

The golden rules of thrift shopping

Go with an open mind, not a shopping list. Thrifting rewards spontaneity. If you go in looking for a specific item you'll almost always leave disappointed. If you go in open to anything — magic happens.

Try everything on. Sizing in second-hand stores is all over the place — a medium might fit like a small, a vintage piece might be cut completely differently. Try it on before you decide.

Visit regularly. Stock changes constantly. A store that had nothing interesting last week might have incredible pieces this week. The thrifters who find the best stuff are the ones who go back again and again.

Don't overlook the "wrong" section. Some of my best finds came from the men's section, the oversized section, or the formal wear rack. Fashion doesn't have rules — neither should your thrifting.

I've always believed that fashion is a language. And nowhere in the world speaks that language quite like South Africa.

Think about it — we are a country of eleven official languages, dozens of ethnic groups, and centuries of layered history. And so much of that lives not just in our food, our music, or our stories, but in the way we get dressed every single morning. The clothes on our backs have always been telling a story. The question is whether we're listening.

When clothing is more than just clothing

For many South African cultures, what you wear is never just about looking good. It carries meaning, history, and belonging. Xhosa beadwork, for example, is a whole conversation — the colours, patterns, and placement of beads can communicate your age, marital status, and even your emotions. A Zulu woman's isigege skirt, worn during ceremonies, is a statement of pride, womanhood, and community. Ndebele geometric patterns painted on homes and worn on bodies are a form of visual language that has survived colonisation and apartheid.

These aren't just "traditional outfits" to be pulled out for Heritage Day once a year. They are living, breathing forms of expression — and honestly, some of the most stunning fashion statements I have ever seen.

Cape Town's streets are a mood board

Growing up in Cape Town, I've had the privilege of watching so many different styles collide and mix on one street corner. The Cape Malay influence in the Bo-Kaap, with its bold colours and rich fabrics. The cool, understated streetwear of the Cape Flats. The eclectic vintage energy of Observatory. The sharp, tailored looks you'll spot in the City Bowl.

Every neighbourhood almost has its own aesthetic. And the people who dress most confidently, in my opinion, are the ones who have stopped trying to fit into one box and started mixing all of them.

The similarity nobody talks about

Here's something I find fascinating: across completely different cultures in South Africa, there is a shared love of colour, boldness, and dressing with intention. Whether it's the vibrant prints of Sotho blanket fashion, the striking beadwork of Zulu and Xhosa dress, or the flamboyant style of Cape Town's Mardi Gras — we are, at our core, a people who are not afraid to be seen.

We just sometimes forget that on a Tuesday when we're trying to blend in.

What this has to do with thrifting

A lot, actually. When I shop second-hand, I'm not just looking for a bargain (though, yes, R50 for a vintage blazer will never not be exciting). I'm looking for pieces with a story. A fabric that reminds me of something. A silhouette that feels like it belongs to someone with something to say.

Thrifting, to me, is one of the most culturally rich ways to dress. You're inheriting history. You're keeping something alive. And in a country with as much history as ours — that feels like the most South African thing you can do.

A space for all of it
